2013 Typhoon Haiyan

Campaign Facts

  • Date: November 2013
  • Amount Raised: $565,000
  • AARP & AARP Foundation Match: $500,000
  • Total Donated Amount Distributed:  $1.56 Million

When Typhoon Haiyan made its devastating landfall in November 2013, it killed thousands and left millions of people homeless or at risk of disease and malnutrition. Relief organizations acted quickly to provide meals, medical care, shelter, and other forms of support to those in need — and today, they're still there, helping families rebuild.

Thanks to the more than 8,300 other compassionate supporters, we raised over $565,000 for our Typhoon Haiyan emergency fund — and with a matching gift of $500,000 from AARP and AARP Foundation, we were able to provide more than $1 million in aid for affected communities. These  funds went to the following organizations, which worked  hard to deliver meals, repair homes, and restore hope to thousands of people — often with a special focus on helping older adults, who were especially vulnerable during this crisis.

  • HelpAge USA worked with the Coalition of Services of the Elderly (COSE) to distribute food, water, hygiene kits, and shelter materials and to set up helpdesks to direct seniors to essential services.
  • CARE partnered with local organizations to provide short-term assistance, such as food distribution, and to work on longer-term recovery efforts.
  • ABS CBN Foundation worked to rebuild homes and connected older adults with food and medical assistance in hard-hit regions.
  • Gawad Kalinga USA provided medical support and new homes to affected seniors and their families.
  • Feed the Hungry, Inc. provided basic sustenance to people located in some of the most remote areas of the Philippines.

We continue to thank our generous donors for their support during this emergency.
