AARP Foundation Experience Corps Volunteer Shares Her Passion for Literacy

Nina Sanchez describes her love of reading and how it fuels her desire to help kids learn.

“I love waking up and having a purpose,” says Nina Sanchez, a retired nurse who tutors elementary school children for AARP Foundation Experience Corps in Casa Grande, Arizona. In the video below, she talks about her experience as a tutor and how her passion for education led to her being awarded a Wish of a Lifetime from AARP™ experience: getting to see one of her granddaughters graduate from college.

Nina also shared a story of the impact she has had on the children she has helped. One day in the grocery store, she saw an adolescent boy who looked very familiar. As she remembers, “He looked at me the same way. And then I realized who he was and he ran to me and he hugged me and he wouldn’t let go.” When the boy’s mother found out Nina had been the boy’s reading tutor, she introduced Nina to her two other children. “The looks on their faces,” Nina recalls. “I felt like a celebrity.” For Nina it was just one of the rewards of giving back to her community through being an AARP Foundation Experience Corps volunteer.
