Supporting Seniors in the Storms' Wake by 2022 Hurricanes Ian and Fiona

Hurricane Ian was one of the deadliest and costliest Category 4 storms in U.S. history in 2022 and devastated many Floridian seniors with low income who continue to grapple with the long-term impacts including an exacerbated housing crisis and challenging economic conditions. In Puerto Rico, Hurricane Fiona caused widespread and weeks-long power outages, left communities underwater, and destroyed bridges and roadways. 

Recognizing the challenges that vulnerable older adults faced because of this disaster, AARP Foundation created a relief fund to support the victims of Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Fion in 2022. Thanks to donors and matching funds from AARP and AARP Foundation, $1.1 million in emergency grants have been distributed. Through the work of these organizations below, donation helped those affected to repair their homes, access legal advocacy, and obtain financial support:

• Legal Aid Service of Collier County (Florida)
• St. Bernard Project (Florida and Puerto Rico)
• Ponce Neighborhood Housing Services (Puerto Rico)
• Fundación Fondo de Acceso a la Justicia (Puerto Rico)
