I’m doing some traveling in the near future and was wondering if you had any tips for me about avoiding thefts. In the past, I have had my wallet and other valuables stolen right out of a bag I was carrying. Do you have any ideas for how I can protect myself from this type of thing happening in the future?
-Dave, Pensacola, Fla.

A company called Pacsafe offers a line of backpacks and laptop cases that it claims are "anti-theft." But for starters, nothing is totally anti-theft. The key here is to minimize the risk of theft as much as possible.

The Pacsafe bags come with built-in steel mesh panels, making it virtually impossible for someone to slash them open with a knife. Some of the bags even have combination locks on the straps, allowing you to attach them to furniture or other items.

Most room thieves just grab and run. So here's another idea: When leaving the room, put a fake wallet on the dresser. Would-be thieves will grab it and go, while your real valuables remain safely hidden in your bag or safe.
