Tony Bennett

Music legend celebrates his 85th birthday with AARP

Tony Bennett entertains at Davies Symphony Hall at the 2010 Black and White Ball

Tony Bennett has moved the hearts and touched the souls of audiences with recordings and live performances for more than 60 years. The son of a grocer and Italian-born immigrant, Anthony Dominick Benedetto was born in Queens, New York, in 1926.

His big break came when comedian Bob Hope noticed him working with Pearl Bailey in Greenwich Village in 1949. With worldwide record sales in the millions, Bennett is a Kennedy Center honoree who has also received 15 Grammy Awards for hits including his signature song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” and other favorites from the classic American songbook.

His passion for music is matched by a lifelong passion for painting. Bennett's Duets II album will be released in September, not long after his 85th birthday.
