AARP's Social Security Q&A Tool

I have two former husbands. I was widowed from the first and divorced from the second. Can I claim benefits on the record of either former spouse?

En español | Once divorced, you will be able to collect benefits from either your first or second husband.  You must generally be married at least 9 months for a marriage that ended in death.  You must have been married at least 10 years if the marriage ended in divorce.  Social Security will give you a benefit based on whichever spouse's earnings provides the highest benefit.
