AARP's Social Security Q&A Tool

How can I get a Social Security number for a new baby?

En español | At the hospital, when you give information for your baby’s birth certificate, you'll be asked if you want to apply for a Social Security number for your baby. You'll be asked for both parents’ Social Security numbers, but if you don't have them you can still apply. If you wait until later, you'll need to complete an Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5) and show Social Security original documents proving your child’s U.S. citizenship, age and identity. Any child older than 12 must appear at a Social Security office for an interview.
