AARP's Social Security Q&A Tool

Do I have to pay federal taxes on my Social Security benefits?

En español | It depends on whether you have other income and how much. If your adjusted gross income plus non-taxable income plus half your Social Security benefit add up to $25,000 or more ($32,000 for joint filers), you will have to pay federal income tax on a portion of your Social Security income. However, that portion will never be higher than 85 percent.
