AARP's Social Security Q&A Tool

I started receiving Social Security at age 66 but continued to work. In 2009, 2010 and 2011, I made more money than I ever had before. When will I see an increase in my monthly Social Security benefit? How often does the Social Security Administration recalculate benefits based on your earnings?

The Social Security Administration is committed to recalculating your earnings and benefits each year after receiving your tax returns. However, it takes a long time for the agency to receive the returns. For example, in 2012, SSA is receiving returns from the 2010 tax year. Thus it can take as long as two years for a benefit to be adjusted. If you feel your benefit hasn't been adjusted and should be, contact the SSA directly at 1-800-772-1213.
