AARP's Social Security Q&A Tool

If my former spouse remarried and later dies, who is eligible for his Social Security benefits?

En español | If you and your former spouse were married for at least 10 years, you are entitled to receive benefits on the death of that person. The current spouse is also eligible to collect benefits on the account as well. Both the first and second spouse can receive benefits without affecting what the other can receive.
