AARP's Social Security Q&A Tool

If I take benefits early, when I reach full retirement age, can I pay back what I have received and then apply for and receive full benefits?

En español | You can choose to withdraw your application within one year of receiving your first benefit.  To do this you must pay back the benefits you have received so far.  When you reapply in the future you will collect full benefits based on the age at which you claim a second time.  This process can only be done once in a person's lifetime.  You can learn more about this option by visiting www.ssa.gov and searching for the “Request for Withdrawal Application”, which is Form SSA-521.
