Around the world today, societies are re-evaluating retirement systems to improve their efficacy and efficiency. These changes often alter the equation that determines the risk borne by various stakeholders (individuals, government and employers). This conference evaluated the efforts by several developed countries to balance the risk in their retirement systems. Through several panel discussions, we examined private and public pensions (the obvious ingredients of most retirement systems) and we looked at health and long-term care programs that help create a complete retirement security system. Panel discussions were moderated by Norm Ornstein, a member of USA Today’s board of contributors, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and a columnist for Roll Call. Mr. Ornstein is an analyst on issues ranging from the election process, to economic policy, and health care.
