Voters in Puerto Rico Support a Public–Private Retirement Savings Option

Voters in Puerto Rico want their lawmakers to pass legislation to help workers save for retirement.

AARP Puerto Rico commissioned this survey of registered voters in Puerto Rico to gauge their opinions on saving for retirement and their support for a public–private retirement savings program for small business owners and their employees.

AARP is supporting states in their efforts to create and implement a state retirement savings option that would enable small business owners and their employees to better prepare for retirement. These public–private managed state programs would be easy for employers to set up with low costs and low risks to them, their employees, and the state.

Key Findings

  • Most (89%) working, registered voters ages 25 to 64 in Puerto Rico support a public-private managed state retirement savings program, with two-thirds (65%) showing strong support.

  •  Nearly all (91%) voters agree that lawmakers in Puerto Rico should support legislation that makes it easier for workers to save for retirement, with the majority of them saying they strongly agree.

  •  One in ten (10%) of all registered voters ages 25 to 64 say their employer does not offer a retirement savings plan. However, if a retirement savings option was available, most (87%) would likely take advantage of it.

Methodology

The AARP survey was conducted among 605 registered voters ages 25–64 residing on the Puerto Rico from April 11–May 22, 2022. Respondents were screened for registered voter status. All data are weighted by age, gender, and race/ethnicity according to the to Census Bureau five-year 2020 ACS statistics. Percentages may not add up to 100% due to rounding. Responses of "not sure" are not reported in  this summary because they are 5% or less.
