Making History in the Bluegrass, Join the Debate!

10.11.12 is the day Centre College makes history, again. The Commission on Presidential Debates selected Centre College to host the nation’s only Vice Presidential Debate, in part, due to its success in hosting the 2000 Vice Presidential Debate. Once again, the quiet town of Danville will be the center of national attention as Centre hosts the Vice Presidential Debate in its Norton Center for the Arts.

AARP invites you to join the debate and be a part of history at Centre College’s free Debate Festival on the campus’ Festival Lawn. Make plans to join AARP and thousands of Kentuckians at the nation’s only Vice Presidential Debate at Centre College on Thursday, October 11th.

AARP is working to engage voters and candidates on the issues that matter most to its members and the 50-plus population. Keeping Social Security and Medicare front and center during this year’s election cycle where the spotlight shines is a top priority for AARP. In Kentucky, that means AARP is the Prime Sponsor of the Vice Presidential Debate Festival and Event Stage at Centre College.

The free, day long festival celebrating the debate is open to the public beginning at Noon and offers hours of live music and entertainment. Guests will be able to watch the Vice Presidential debate at 9:00 p.m. (EST) via a live televised broadcast to the Festival Stage.

Before the debate begins, AARP is hosting a live Community Conversation from the stage on the future of Social Security and Medicare. Following the Vice Presidential debate, the entertainment continues with a live performance by the Marshall Tucker Band.

Information and resources are now available to inform AARP members and voters on the candidates’ positions so they can vote for the candidates that best represent their views and values. The You’ve Earned a Say: Vote for Retirement Security 2012 Voters’ Guide is an important resource for Americans age 50 and over, now available online.

For more than 25 years, non-partisan voter education and engagement have been part of the AARP mission to help Americans live their best lives. Voters and the media must ask candidates questions about issues that affect the future of retirement security. Voters need facts and not spin to take part in the debate and shape our nation's future.

AARP expects the collaboration with Centre College, which includes a series of On-Campus, Intergenerational Conversations on Social Security and Medicare through Debate Day, will help the candidates, the media, and general public focus more on the critical concerns of the ever-important 50-plus voting bloc.

Can’t make the trip? Tune-in the national coverage and host your own Debate Watch Party with friends and family. The You’ve Earned a Say: Vote for Retirement Security 2012 Voters’ Guide is available as an important resource for American voters and especially those 50 and over. It’s a great conversation starter for any debate watch party. See what the candidates are saying in their own words.
