AARP Is In Your Corner, Iowa

In carrying out the mission of founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, AARP has offices in every state working with members and volunteers to improve their quality of life and help them fulfill their goals and dreams and to age with dignity.

Since 1958, when retired high school principal Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus set out to change the circumstances for retirees like the retired teacher she found living in a chicken coop because she couldn’t afford proper housing or medical care, AARP has worked tirelessly to change the way older Americans are treated.

It’s why we fight to protect your Social Security and Medicare and police against fraud and scams. It’s why we fight to lower your energy bills, and provide more choice and control over how you and your loved ones receive long-term care. It’s also why we fight for retiree and consumer protections on Wall Street and help 50+ workers improve their career skills and find employment.

In Iowa, AARP is visible both at the State Capitol and in your local communities. During the 2011 Iowa Legislative Session, we’ve been actively fighting to protect the pocketbooks of Iowa families and small businesses from unfair utility rate hikes to cover the up-front costs for nuclear power plant development. We are not opposed to nuclear power as a viable option for the state’s energy future; however, we are standing up against the proposed legislation because it lacks protections for consumers.

Today, with nearly 380,000 members in Iowa, AARP works to leverage our collective strength to ensure that the needs, interests and concerns of the 50+ community are heard in the marketpalce and by our elected officials.

Over the years AARP has led the way in advocating on the issues that affect older Iowans and their families from succeeding in passing the Consumer Right of Action giving Iowans the right to take legal action against scam artists, to securing funding to expand home and community based services to help keep Iowans independent in their homes, and expanding health care programs for older Iowans and persons with disabilities. AARP Iowa continues to honor the life and legacy of our founder, Dr. Andrus.
