2010 Livable Communities Awards

This view of the Common House shows the community's modern take on Southwest vernacular architecture — the stucco walls echo the more traditional adobe and the shade structure over the patio alludes to traditional viga roof structures. Wide gravel paths reflect the community's desire to minimize environmental impact — the permeable paving material on paths keeps rainwater from running off, allowing it to seep into the ground. By consensus, cars are parked at the periphery of the development. — Text by Michael Chotiner; Photographs by Jay L. Clendenin/Aurora

2010 Livable Communities Awards
SANTA FE, N.M.

Category Winner for Developer — up to 250 units

ElderGrace is a cohousing condominium development for low- and middle-income people 55 and older. It was designed through a partnership between its resident members and the nonprofit Santa Fe Community Housing Trust. Planning began in 2006, and the community now consists of 14 duplex homes, encompassing 28 one- and two-bedroom units. A Common House gives residents plenty of opportunities to meet up. The 3.5-acre site provides shared outdoor spaces,  including walking and biking paths and a community garden and orchard, all within a half-mile of grocery stores and a quarter-mile of public transportation to downtown Santa Fe, just five miles away.
