2010 Livable Communities Awards

All apartments and townhouses are designed with a "living bay," which includes a contiguous kitchen, dining and living area. The open plan allows for balanced natural light from at least two directions, reducing interior glare. All units have no-step entries; common areas have accessible lever-type door handles and durable smooth-surface flooring for easy maneuvering with wheelchairs and walkers. While all 30 homes incorporate many universal design features, four have fully accessible baths and kitchens. — Text by Michael Chotiner; Photographs by Jay L. Clendenin/Aurora

PORTLAND, ORE.

Category Winner for Architect-Designed Projects

Daybreak is an intergenerational cohousing development designed by Schemata Workshop Inc. It opened late in 2009 in the Overlook neighborhood of North Portland. The close-in urban location means public transportation, grocery stores, restaurants and cafés, and schools are all easily accessible. Values that shaped the design include fostering multigenerational living, integrating with the surrounding neighborhood and incorporating sustainable building materials.
