The buildings vary at two, three and four stories, all connected with exterior walkways — there are no dark, scary hallways. An elevator at the Common House services each level. The walkways also function as sunshades for south-facing windows to reduce summer heat. Cross-ventilation and energy-efficient operable windows help with ventilation; air conditioning isn't needed on even the hottest days. — Text by Michael Chotiner; Photographs by Jay L. Category Winner for Architect-Designed Projects

Daybreak is an intergenerational cohousing development designed by Schemata Workshop Inc. It opened late in 2009 in the Overlook neighborhood of North Portland. The close-in urban location means public transportation, grocery stores, restaurants and cafés, and schools are all easily accessible. Values that shaped the design include fostering multigenerational living, integrating with the surrounding neighborhood and incorporating sustainable building materials.
