The old bathroom's "garden tub" and wall-mounted vanity were difficult for Dennis to use in his wheelchair. Other problems included a stall shower with an 8-inch curb, a toilet with access from the front only, and a large window that invited heat gain — an unwanted feature in Florida's sunny climate — and compromised privacy. In setting the task for the designer, the Masons said that they had no objections to tearing out and relocating the main fixtures, but they wanted to stay within the existing bathroom's footprint.
