As the U.S. population ages, workplaces will include more and more employees who have eldercare responsibilities. For many workers and employers, this is unfamiliar territory—underscoring the need to develop public and private solutions that ensure these workers receive equal employment opportunity and are protected from discrimination in the workplace. This Insight on the Issues defines what family responsibilities discrimination is,  describes the types of workplace discrimination encountered by working caregivers of older persons,  highlights the limited protections available to working caregivers under existing laws, and recommends ways to develop policy and practice solutions to protect working caregivers with eldercare responsibilities from employment discrimination.
