Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage

Limited Income? There's Still Time to Apply

Good news! If you have limited income and resources, the AARP Extra Help Application Center wants to help you apply for Extra Help at no extra cost to you.

Extra Help pays for all or part of your monthly premiums and annual deductibles and lowers your prescription co-payments. Extra Help could save you thousands of dollars each year, and it is free to apply. Extra Help works with any Medicare Part D plan to save you money on your prescription costs. Even if you don’t have a Part D plan yet, you can still sign up for Extra Help.

If you have Medicare and your income and resources are limited, you should apply today. Even if you are already enrolled in a Medicare drug plan, you can still get help. To apply, call the AARP Extra Help Application Center toll-free at 1-800-985-6848.

You have nothing to lose, and a lot to gain.

If You Want Medicare Drug Coverage

During the Open Enrollment period, which runs from November 15 to December 31, it is best to sign up with a drug plan before you know whether you qualify for Extra Help.

If your application for Extra Help is denied and you didn’t enroll in a drug plan during the open enrollment period, you won’t be able to enroll until November 2007 and your coverage won’t start until January 2008. You’ll likely pay a higher penalty if you were eligible to enroll earlier, but chose not to do so. And you’ll pay this penalty for as long as you have Part D.

Even without the Extra Help, you’ll likely save on the cost of your drugs by enrolling in a Medicare drug plan.
