Restaurants: Lighten Up and Enjoy

By Martina Navratilova - 11/23/2009

Not all restaurants load on the fat and calories. Before you head out to eat, scout out the ones serving relatively healthy fare.

Then, on arrival at the restaurant, consider different ways to lighten up your meal so you don't overdo it:

  • Order an appetizer with a side salad. Or consider splitting a meal with a friend.
  • Request half the entrée with a double order of veggies on the side.
  • Ask for salad dressing on the side, or order your salad plain with a little vinegar or lemon juice.
  • Be politely picky. Find out which dishes are prepared in the healthiest manner, with the least amounts of fats, unhealthy oils, gravies, or heavy sauces.
  • Control your portions and try to leave some open space on your plate.
  • Remember, the “doggie bag” is your friend. Don't be ashamed to save half your meal for the next day. It's smart.
  • Go easy on dessert. Ask for a plate of fresh fruit, or just have two or three bites of a sweet treat. Weight control is largely about portion control.
