Carbs and Protein: The Dynamic Duo

In this video, AARP health and fitness ambassador Martina Navratilova touts the value of "good" carbs and protein in your diet.
Combine them in energy-boosting snacks to bolster hormones involved in muscle repair and growth, she advises. Aim for a ratio of four parts carbohydrate to one part protein. Some of Martina's favorite refueling combos include:

 

  • One scrambled egg white and half a multigrain bagel
  • One medium banana and one-half cup of cottage cheese
  • One small whole wheat pita and 2 tablespoons hummus with a glass of soy milk
  • A fruit smoothie made with yogurt or soy milk and fruit
