When you're trying to make changes in your life—in this case, dropping pounds and getting fit—you need people around who urge you to stay off the sweets and do your workouts, says Martina Navratilova, AARP's health and fitness ambassador.

You need to build "Team You."

But how to go about it? Martina offers some suggestions in this video: 
 

  • Pick the right people. Make sure they're people you respect, who respect you, and who will encourage you.
  • Include a workout buddy who is at your level or higher—someone who can push you to work a little harder.
  • Consider joining a sports group, like a club or a league. They are ready-made support networks.
  • Identify your needs to your friends and family. Speak up for yourself and ensure they are clear about your direction and your goals.
  • Make little bets or deals. They help draw people into your mission and enlist their feedback.
