Get Strong to the Core

By Martina Navratilova

Many of us underestimate the power of our core―the muscles of our torso and pelvis―says AARP health and fitness ambassador Martina Navratilova. When we strengthen this muscle group, we stabilize our entire body, making our torso like the trunk of a tree. When we strengthen this muscle group, we stabilize our entire body, like the trunk of a tree.

Other benefits of a strong core include improved balance and posture, toned abs, diminished lower-back pain, and better athletic performance, explains Martina in her video.

Follow along with Martina as she shows you how to strengthen your core with three exercises. As you do them, try to incorporate the following tips:

  • Maintain proper posture and balance.
  • Include stretching exercises to improve your flexibility and range of motion.
  • Use "toys," such as exercise tubing and free weights, to challenge muscles and to make your workout more interesting. (See the "Break Out the Toys" video.)
  • Progress to exercising on unstable surfaces, such as a balance board, a foam roller, or an Xerdisc, to improve your stability and balance.
