Fitness for a First Lady

A former smoker who has to prod herself to exercise, Laura Bush seems determined to practice what she preaches, working out to maintain heart health. She uses an elliptical exercise machine inside the White House, "but mainly I like to walk outside. That's my preference, but I don't have that many opportunities. I can walk outside at Camp David. I can walk out at the ranch when we're there."
There's an outside track around the South Lawn of the White House, but it isn't very long, "so you have to walk lots and lots and lots of laps to even walk a mile," she says. "So I don't do that as often as I walk inside."
She also works out with a weight trainer three days a week.
The first lady says the secret to following an exercise regime is working out with a friend, in her case, her sister-in-law, Dorothy Bush Koch of Bethesda, Md. "It's the only time we get to see each other," she says. "We're obviously very busy. If she didn't come to work out with me, we would go months at a time, probably, without seeing each other. So it's been very important, both for exercising, but also for me emotionally, to have my sister-in-law to work out with."
