Australia: New Strategic Plan Promotes ‘Healthy and Meaningful Ageing’
The Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing, or MACA, of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) released its 2006-2008 Strategic Plan, titled “Healthy and Meaningful Ageing.” Five themes are outlined in the Plan, laying the groundwork for policies and programs established by the government.
The Strategic Plan is a critical document that the aging community lays out for the ACT government. ”The Strategic Plan, and other advice provided by the ACT Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing, will form a [sic] valued input to ACT Government agencies when determining priorities, policy directions and program delivery for seniors,” says Tanya Eaton, Senior Policy Officer at the ACT Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services.
ACT will be under considerable demographic pressure over the next 25 years as the baby boomers enter retirement. By 2031, more than a quarter of the Australian population will be age 60-plus. “One of the key issues facing policy makers and program delivery is that the profile of the ACT’s population will continue to change,” says Eaton.
