Important Victory for Medicare Beneficiaries

We asked AARP members to urge their Representative to vote in favor of H.R. 4, a common-sense bill that could help lower drug prices for millions of Medicare beneficiaries. Your voice was heard and the House voted today to pass the bill.

Now, we urge the Senate to act. Making prescription drugs more affordable is just one of the building blocks needed to ensure that Americans have the health and financial security they deserve.

January 2007

The 110th Congress is heating up, and AARP needs your help to pass a common-sense bill that could lower drug prices for millions of Medicare beneficiaries.

Right now, Medicare is prohibited by law from bargaining directly with pharmaceutical companies for lower drug prices. Critics contend that because of this restriction, Medicare beneficiaries are forced to pay even higher out-of-pocket costs for the basic medicine they need.

This could all change – but we need your help. The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on H.R. 4, the “Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act,” on Friday, January 12. The bill will allow Medicare to use its collective bargaining power to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies and, in the long run, help to reduce prescription drug costs for AARP members and all older Americans.

The pharmaceutical industry will be fighting to prevent Medicare from getting the right to bargain for better drug prices. We need your help today to fight back and achieve this common sense change.

Send a message to your Representative now by email or by calling 1-800-795-5336. Tell them: “Support H.R. 4. Vote to give Medicare the right to bargain for lower drug prices. It just makes sense.”
