Mirror Use

Many crashes among older drivers involve merging and changing lanes. Proper mirror use can give the older driver the side and rear vision she needs to drive safely.

In addition to the forward field of vision, it is important for the driver to have good side and rear views. To use the outside and rearview mirrors effectively, the driver must accurately position each mirror.

Many drivers have not received instruction on how to adjust their mirrors. If drivers have learned to do this, chances are many years have gone by. They might have gotten into the bad habit of not using one of the mirrors, or not using them in combination. Perhaps they have a medical condition such as arthritis or a cervical fusion that prevents them from turning their neck far enough to see one of the outside mirrors.  An occupational therapy practitioner or driving rehabilitation specialist maybe able offer education about mirror add ons and or use of specialized devices.

Use of the enhanced mirror settings can minimize a driver's blind spots and reduce glare. Drivers who have attended a driver refresher course may be familiar with the enhanced mirror settings but may not have put it to use in their own vehicle.
