Drivers should not have to fully extend a leg or stretch with their toes to depress the gas or brake pedals through to full range. When drivers reach in this way, it limits their control, tires them, and causes fatigue in the leg muscles.
Various conditions associated with aging can affect a driver's range of motion and strength. Those changes reduce the driver's ability to pick up his or her foot and move it quickly and efficiently to or from the brake pedal. The inability to quickly move the foot to the brake pedal lengthens the driver's reaction time, which creates more dangers.
