Many drivers don't know how airbags work, where they are located, and what happens when they are activated. Often, drivers are unaware of the recommended minimum distance they should sit from the airbag to allow it to work properly and to minimize any risk of harm that could result from sitting too close to a deployed airbag.
The standard for airbag safety is to maintain at least 10 inches between your breastbone or sternum and the airbag, which is located in the center of the steering wheel. When the airbag is deployed in an emergency, the bag fills with air and moves out toward your chest like a large balloon. It only stays inflated for three-quarters of a second. The airbag provides a cushion to the driver as it deflates.
The airbag's deployment occurs so quickly that drivers sometimes don't even realize what has happened until the airbag is already deflated.
If the driver's breastbone is less than the recommended minimum of 10 inches from the airbag, it may be necessary for her to slide the seat back until she reaches the minimum 10 inches of clearance. The solution may not be simple, because achieving a safe distance from the airbag may in fact place the driver at risk for difficulty reaching and depressing the gas or brake.
