A properly positioned steering wheel should allow the driver a line of sight at least 3 inches above (or clear of) the steering wheel. This span allows optimal visibility in front and on the sides of the vehicle.
The driver is advised to be careful that the steering wheel does not obstruct her clear view of gauges. Optimally, the bottom of the steering wheel should clear the top of the driver's thighs by about 2 inches, so that leg movement is not impeded. The free movement of the right leg between or among the pedals is especially important.
In addition, the driver should be able to reach the wheel easily, with arms slightly bent for comfort and shoulders relaxed.
The steering wheel, which houses the airbag, must be positioned so that the airbag is directed toward the driver's chest, not at her face.
Another common problem is that drivers are unaware of the importance of the position of the head restraint. Exacerbating this is the fact that many do not know how to adjust the restraint properly. This safety device minimizes neck injuries in a crash. Its ideal position should be at the farthest protruding portion of the head, from mid to above ear level. There should be only 2 ½ inches or less from the back of the head to the restraint pad. In fact, it is fine if the head actually comes in contact with the head restraint.
