AARP and the National Association of Home Builders have chosen Raleigh remodeling firm Quality Design and Construction, Inc. to receive one of the groups' cosponsored 2007 Livable Communities Awards for forward thinking in the field of home and community design. The award honors builders, developers and remodelers who create attractive, well-designed homes and communities that meet criteria for safety, comfort and accessibility for people of all ages and abilities.

The awards recognize five companies in four states: two developers, two builders and one remodeler.

The categories and winners include:

  • Builder up to 2500 square feet - John Wesley Miller Companies (for Armory Park del Sol in Tucson, AZ)
  • Builder more than 2500 square feet - Wendt Builders Inc. (for Olde Town Grayson, Lot 13B, in Grayson, GA)
  • Developer up to 250 units - Madison Area Community Land Trust (for Troy Gardens in Madison, WI)
  • Developer more than 250 units - The Integral Group (for CollegeTown at West End in Atlanta, GA)
  • Remodeler more than $25,000 - Quality, Design & Construction, Inc. (for "Ann's Ridge Road Dream" in Raleigh, NC)

The winning Raleigh remodeling project is an outstanding example of how to incorporate universal design features - such as wide doorways, easily accessible drawers and cabinets, accessible bath and shower facilities and advanced lighting - into an existing home. The remodeled home was originally a bland duplex, but it has been transformed into a fully accessible, single-family house.

The winners will be honored at a Washington, D.C. dinner and will be featured in the January/February issue of AARP The Magazine, the nation's most widely circulated magazine.
