Happy Father’s Day to 14 Celebrity Dads!

Let’s hear it for these very public fathers who put their private lives first

    Bill Gates, 60

The multibillionaire and his wife, Melinda, have passed their belief in philanthropy down to Jennifer (here with her dad), 20; Rory, 17; and Phoebe, 13. In 2014, Melinda told Time magazine that each child must give a third of their allowance to a charity they select; Mom and Dad then each match that amount. “When you have a fortune that is almost hard to imagine,” says Bill, “the best thing is not to pass that on to one’s children. That distorts their life situation.”

    Tom Hanks, 59

The down-to-earth actor has two Oscars and four kids: Colin (his costar in The Great Buck Howard), 38; and Elizabeth, 34, with ex-wife Samantha Lewes; and Truman (left), 20; and Chet (right), 25, with actress and second wife Rita Wilson. Hanks was a father by age 21 — and feels lucky about it: “I didn’t have the luxury of being stoned a lot, and I never drank too much. I thought it was more fun to see what was going on.”

    Billy Joel, 67

The Piano Man has two daughters a generation apart: musician Alexa Ray (above), 30, whose mother is Joel’s second wife, model Christie Brinkley; and Della Rose, who turns 1 this summer, with fourth wife Alexis. It was Alexa who inspired Joel’s “Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)” on his 1993 album River of Dreams: “Someday your child may cry / And if you sing this lullabye / Then in your heart / There will always be a part of me.”

    Elton John, 69

The British pop legend is Pops to two sons — Elijah, 3, and Zachary, 5 — with David Furnish, his longtime partner (and, since 2014, husband). “Having children changed everything about my life,” Sir Elton reflects. “I’ve learned the simplest things in life, like having a minute with them, are worth more than any painting, any photograph, any house or hit record.”

    John McEnroe, 57

We’d love to know what advice Anna McEnroe, 20, is giving papa John here, but it’s clear that hotheads make cool dads: Once known as “Super Brat” for blowing his stack on tennis courts worldwide, Mac is now the father of six: Kevin, 30; Sean, 29; and Emily, 25, all with ex-wife Tatum O’Neal; and Anna; Ava, 17; and stepdaughter Ruby, 30, with his rock-singer current spouse, Patty Smyth. The best part of that deal, Mr. McEnroe? “There’s always one who wants to hug you and say, ‘Daddy, I love you.’”

    George Lucas, 72

The man who created über-evil Darth Vader is a force for good to his three adopted children — Amanda (second from right), 34; Katie (far right), 28; and son Jett, 23 — with ex-wife Marcia, as well as to his daughter Everest, 2, with current spouse Mellody (far left). Lucas, who backed away from directing when the older three were growing up, likewise chose not to oversee the third Star Wars trilogy in order to spend time with his youngest.

    Joe Montana, 59

The three-time Super Bowl MVP and his third wife, Jennifer, have worked hard to protect their four children — Alexandra, 30; Elizabeth, 29; Nate (shown here), 26; and Nicholas, 24 — from the public eye. Everyone can see where Montana got his winning attitude, however: “My mother and father, Joe and Theresa Montana, brought me along and taught me to never quit.”

    Barack Obama, 54

The president’s parenting style can be summed up in a word: stability. To avoid making Sasha (right), 15, change schools when he leaves office, for example, the Obamas have opted to remain in Washington, D.C. The Papa-in-Chief declined an invite, however, to speak at the high school graduation of Harvard-bound Malia, 17, this spring: “I’m gonna be sitting there with dark glasses, sobbing.”

    Brad Pitt, 52

The “Sexiest Man Alive” calls being a father “the most rewarding job in the world.” Exhausting, too, we imagine: After falling in love with costar Angelina Jolie on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2005, Pitt plunged into parenthood with the adoptions of sons Maddox, now 14; and Pax, 12, far right; as well as daughter Zahara. 11. Born to the couple in 2006 was daughter Shiloh, 10, third from left; followed two years later by twins Knox and Vivienne, 7, at far left.

    Chris Rock, 51

This year’s Oscar host (here with his mother, Rosalie) is close to daughters Lola, 13; and Zahra, 12; even in mid-divorce from their mother, Malaak. “When people talk about the ‘sacrifices’ they make for their children,” says Rock, “I look at them like they’re crazy. ‘Sacrifice’ implies there’s something better to do than being with your children.”

    Jerry Seinfeld, 62

The comedy kingpin and wife Jessica are parents to Sascha, 15; Julian, 13; and Shepherd, 10. “The bedtime routine for my kids is like this Royal Coronation Jubilee Centennial of rinsing and dental appliances,” Seinfeld told Jimmy Fallon, “and I’ve gotta read eight different moron books. You know what my bedtime story was when I was a kid? Darkness!”

    Steven Spielberg, 69

The director of The BFG shares an extended brood of seven with second wife Kate Capshaw (far left), including their three children together: son Sawyer (far right), 24; daughter Sasha (second from right), 26; and daughter Destry, 19. The others are stepdaughter Jessica, 40; son Max, 31 (with former spouse Amy Irving); adopted son Theo (second from left), 27; and adopted daughter Mikaela, 20. As a child of divorce, Spielberg calls fathering “a major job,” but adds: “I need both things in my life: my job to be a director, and my kids to direct me.”

    Denzel Washington, 61

“There’s life, and there’s making a living,” the two-time Oscar winner (and father of four) once observed. “Family is life.” No wonder he chose to share the stage with his brood — wife Pauletta; daughters Olivia, 25; and Katia, 29; and son John, 31 — upon receiving the Cecil B. DeMille award at this year’s Golden Globes. (Olivia’s twin, Malcolm, was tied up with his film studies.)

    Stevie Wonder, 66

The prolific R&B artist is a wonder at extending the family tree: He is father to nine children, including sons Kailand, 14; and Mandla, 11; shown here attending a basketball tournament with their dad. After the 1975 birth of oldest daughter Aisha, Wonder called her “the one thing that I needed in my life and in my music for a long time.” Literally in his music: Her cries can be heard on “Isn’t She Lovely?” from Wonder’s 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life
