Community Exchange

Community Exchange is your space for sharing with others what makes your community the place where you can see yourself living out your life to the fullest. Go on! Brag a bit about why living where you live means you live in a home you can afford, where there are nearby services like hospitals, shopping malls, and where there is good access to places to work and play! And, to top it off, tell us about all the different transportatin options you have to get to these places---like the good public transportation, the available sidewalks/walking paths that you allow you to get around when driving a car is not an option, or the great street signs and good road designs in your neighborhood that make it really nice when you do choose to drive!

Ok, so maybe you don't have all this, so what can you do about it? You can make a difference! And, Community Exchange will even give you some examples of how you can take action to make your community THE community where YOU can live out you life to the fullest!

AARP Georgia is proud to sponsor the Atlanta Regional Commission’s community design forum, Re-imagine the Way We Live Together: Designing Communities for the Growing Older Adult Population. The forum takes place February 10 through 17 at the Loudermilk Center in downtown Atlanta.

AARP’s research shows that much needs to be done to prepare the country for the older adult population as the boomers approach retirement. This demographic phenomenon will put new strains on communities as this population starts demanding change in housing and community design that promotes aging in place and greater access to appropriate and affordable mobility options.

The Atlanta Regional Commission, in partnership with the internationally recognized town planning and architecture firm Duany, Plater-Zyberk & Co., is convening citizens, government officials, planners, transportation planners and aging and health experts to actively develop comprehensive plans in 5 communities in metro Atlanta.  According to Cathie Berger, Director of the metro Atlanta Area Agency on Aging, "The plans will integrate a mix of uses and incomes in walkable environments that meet the needs of the growing adult population while at the same attracting people of all ages."

Please click on the link below to watch the presentations and to view the preliminary plans for each of the six sites.
