Despite Hollywood's infatuation with youth, half of movie tickets are bought by people over 30. That's why we created a weekly radio feature that focuses exclusively on films created by and for this too-often forgotten age group. "Movies For Grownups" previews upcoming movies, reviews current theatrical and home video releases, and interviews filmmakers whose work reflects the hopes, dreams, and experience of older moviegoers.
Bill Newcott, host of "Movies For Grownups," has spent more time in darkened rooms than most people, and that's a good thing when you love the movies as much as he does. He's been writing about cinema for 30 years, first as a film critic in New York and Los Angeles, and later as an editor with The National Enquirer and National Geographic Magazine. Bill is now the Entertainment editor for AARP The Magazine, where he created the annual Chaise d'Or (Golden Chair) awards for Movies for Grownups.
"Movies for Grownups" is available as a weekly podcast, as are all our other AARP radio programs. Get more information here.
The 1962 Western "How the West Was Won" was one of the last of the great epic movies, filmed in Cinerama for a curving widescreen. It's now available on DVD, and Bill Newcott reminds us of the story and importance of this saga of the Prescott family's westward move.
He "grew up" as Mearth, the martian son on the '80s TV sitcom Mork and Mindy, but Jonathan Winters has been entertaining us since the 1960's. This "certifiably" comedian talks with Bill Newcott about his latest project.
Beneath an immense 60-foot screen showing the movie, Howard Shore's multiple award-winning score for "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy is brought to life by more than 300 musicians performing live. Bill Newcott chats with conductor Ludwig Wicki.
