AARP Statement from Director of Government Relations David Sloane on Results of Iowa Caucuses
News Release
January 3, 2008
WASHINGTON, DC – "Baby boomers were engaged and involved in the Iowa caucuses at significant levels, with polling showing over 70 percent of Republican and 60 percent of Democratic caucus goers over the age of 45. Further, entrance polling shows these caucus goers are concerned about where the candidates are on the most pressing domestic issues: health care and financial security. Tonight's results also indicate that these kitchen table issues are not merely important to older Americans, but younger ones as well. As candidates address the issues important to this country they must ensure that solutions to these issues are fair to all generations.
"Governor Huckabee's success is not surprising as he began more than a year ago talking to AARP members - attending multiple AARP events and hearing the concerns affecting the 50-plus population. Similarly, Senator Obama's victory tonight shows the importance of his renewed efforts to focus on the issues that matter most to AARP members.
"As the candidates move to campaign in New Hampshire, it's become clear that the issues that matter most to our members will be critical. Those candidates who address the issues of affordable health care and lifetime financial security will continue to get the attention of all generations, as well as AARP members."
