Marcia Porter-Applewhite is an executive secretary directly supporting the senior vice president and director of AARP's Public Policy Institute. Marcia performs primarily in an administrative and programming capacity, coordinating the SVP's internal and external schedules, including departmental events, speaking engagements, media requests and publication launches. Marcia serves as the SVP's first point of contact with staff and internal and external clients. Marcia has represented AARP at a variety of external events such as AARP's Member Event and various annual conferences including those of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), and the American Society of Aging (ASA).
Prior to AARP, Marcia served at the United States Probation Office, where she performed criminal background and credit checks utilizing local and national databases monitoring offender case status with federal and local courts. She also worked at the Academy for Educational Development, where she played a key role in the development of U.S. Agency for International Development billing, cost control measures, grant oversight and monitoring of expenditures against funding for primary education projects in Ethiopia, Ghana, Uganda and other third world countries.
Marcia is active in a variety of civic and cultural organizations. Outside of professional interests, she travels widely, reads and enjoys spending time with family and friends.
