African art is sparking new conversation thanks to the energetic director's eye for exhibits at the National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C.
For Dr. Johnnetta Cole, interpreting some of Africa's most prized sculptures, masks and musical instruments also directs her life's third act. A descendent of Florida's first black millionaire, Abraham Lincoln Lewis, Cole was the first African American female president of Spelman College and named to then-president elect Bill Clinton's transition team. Now she guides an art collection that transcends time and continents.
