University Physicians Healthcare's mission is threefold: medical care to patients, medical research, and training and teaching physicians. Flexible work options over the past 10 years have led to outcomes including reduced absenteeism and tardiness and enhanced recruitment.

Telecommuting has helped the organization more effectively use office space in the face of increases in staff and resulting space constraints. In addition, telecommuting helps the organization meet goals required by the county's travel reduction program, which encourages reduced travel to promote clean air.

University Physicians allows for phased retirement, but employees cannot collect benefits until they are fully retired.

Benefits:

  • Full-time employees pay 20 percent for family coverage. Part-time employees (minimum 20 hours/week) pay 38 percent for family coverage.
  • The organization offers a 403(b) plan to full- and part-time employees upon working one year and 1,000 hours of service. Matching is 50 percent up to the first four percent contribution by the employee with a maximum match of two percent by University Physicians. In addition, the organization provides quarterly contributions of seven percent of the employee's adjusted base quarterly salary.

Thirty-nine percent of University Physicians employees are 50+. Thirty-four percent of new hires in the past year are 50+.
