AARP Connecticut Reorganizes For Effective Advocacy

To more effectively represent the interests of our members with the state and federal government, AARP has put into place a new three-part advocacy structure:
- The Connecticut Advocacy Team (CAT) is comprised of all AARP members working in support of our state and federal issue campaigns, such as protecting Social Security and securing prescription drug coverage under Medicare and ConnPACE. CAT members will write the letters, make the calls and attend AARP advocacy events throughout the state.
- Five District Advocacy Teams (DATs) have been established, one for each federal congressional district. The DATs are AARP's central grassroots presence in each region of the state. The volunteers on each DAT will organize events and meetings with state and federal legislators and candidates within each district. They will also coordinate CAT activities and work with AARP's 80 local chapters.
- Our statewide advocacy efforts will be coordinated by the Advocacy Leadership Committee (ALC), a group of 10 volunteer members, including the leaders of each DAT and our chapter coordinator, along with the staff of our new state office in Hartford.
With enthusiastic and savvy volunteers and members, in partnership with the professional staff at the new state office, and with the support of our national staff and resources, AARP Connecticut will be a force to be reckoned with on state and federal issues.
The more AARP members become active in the Advocacy Teams, the more effective we'll be. Anyone interested in joining the Connecticut Advocacy Team or in volunteering for a District Advocacy Team should contact Ed Dale at the AARP Connecticut office by telephone: 860-548-3165, or email: edale@aarp.org.
