Stay Mobile and Engaged in Your Community

AARP Mobility Resources

Links to getting around without getting behind the wheel of a car.

AARP offers many resources to help you get where you want to go without driving your own car. We have information to help you explore walking, biking, public transportation and other options. We also have information to help you evaluate and improve your community so that people of all ages can stay active and engaged to achieve the highest possible quality of life.

The Getting Around Guide: An AARP Guide to Walking, Bicycling and Public Transportation (PDF): This guide can help you take advantage of fun, healthy, and economic ways for getting around your community. It provides tips for walking, biking, and taking public transportation or other transportation options, including how to find and use them, and what you can do to advocate for change, whether you live in a small town, suburb, or big city. (To order the  printed brochure, call 1-888-OUR-AARP and ask for Stock #D19294 or view it online.)

La Guía Para Usar Otros Medios de Transporte (PDF): A Spanish translation of the Getting Around Guide (see above). (To order the  printed brochure, call 1-888-OUR-AARP and ask for Stock #D19393.)

Riding The Bus: Our online videos can help new riders take that first trip.  Video segments include "Planning Your Trip," "Taking Your Trip," and "Additional Services."

Sidewalks and Streets Survey: This tool kit, housed on the AARP Create The Good website, helps make walking safer by teaching small groups to take simple walkability surveys and implement improvements based on the survey results. Also available in Spanish (PDF).

Pedestrian Mobility and Safety Audit Guide:  Produced by the Institute of Traffic Engineers and AARP, this guide can supplement the Sidewalks and Streets Survey (above). It gives additional ideas on what to do before the survey so that improvements can be made more successfully after the survey. The guide has many photos showing what to look for.

This resource includes an executive summary (PDF) and results from four survey locations, including:

Promising Approaches for Promoting Lifelong Community Mobility (PDF):  Produced by University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute with support from AARP, this guide highlights programs and initiatives that hold promise for enhancing the safety and mobility of older adults across the nation. Areas covered in the guide include driver screening and assessment, education and training, vehicle design and advanced technology, roadway design, transitioning from driving, transportation coordination, and alternative transportation options. (See also: program and initiative updates and additions since publication.)

Mobility Related Research and Policy:  AARP’s Public Policy Institute conducts research to help promote Livable Communities—inviting, walkable places with a higher quality of life for all ages. Livable communities include a range of travel choices, affordable and appropriate housing, and other features and services that support independent living. Visit aarp.org's Public Policy Institute/Livable Communities page for insightful policy and research reports with ideas for expanding mobility options, improving transportation safety, and revitalizing communities.
