- Talk to your supervisor or human resources staffer to explain your situation; keep a record of such discussions in case you need to explain your decisions later on.
- Say that you may need to make calls from the office, or be absent from work with little or no advance notice, until the crisis is resolved.
- Consider taking unpaid leave. The federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires that companies with 50 or more employees grant up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to eligible employees for caregiving situations. To learn more, visit the U.S. Department of Labor online .
