AARP Helps Launch Older Worker Centers

The first of five Mature Worker Resource Centers has opened in Swanton as part of a US Department of Labor grant to Vermont.

The centers, operated by Vermont Associates for Training and Development, will enhance the state’s ability to serve older workers looking to reenter the workforce, change careers, learn a new skill or just find work.  With the support and participation of AARP Vermont and other partners, these Career Transition Hubs coordinate existing resources and services for employers, older workers, and training providers. Specific services include assessment, coaching, job search, and training as well as providing information about job training and job opportunities.

The Mature Worker Resource Center will be the public outreach arm of the Aging Worker Initiative Demonstration Project funded through the U.S. Department of Labor.

According to Pat Elmer, the Executive Director of Vermont Associates, “Anyone who is a mature worker, who is looking to retrain or change the work they do, or retirees interested in returning to the workforce, will benefit from the services offered at these Resource Centers,” said Elmer. “They will be able to learn what training resources are available in Vermont, what type of financial aid might be available to finance that training, as well as other services that may help them be successful in re-tooling for a new career.”

AARP will assist in outreach, public relations and communications for the centers, while emphasizing the role of older workers as a valuable and productive labor pool that can meet the future workforce needs of the Vermont economy.  “The ability for Vermont to develop, attract, and retain a well-educated and skilled workforce is a key factor in economic growth,” said Greg Marchildon, AARP Vermont state director. “Older workers are an important, though often underutilized, labor resource that can meet the workforce needs of the Vermont economy going forward.”
