Kia has recalled more than 427,000 Telluride SUVs because they may roll away while parked, according to a notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The affected vehicles’ intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft may not be fully engaged, which can result in the vehicle rolling away, the notice said.

The company began investigating the issue after drivers reported their cars rolling away or hearing strange noises, feeling vibrations or having difficulty putting the car in gear. It was determined that improper assembly was the cause of the defect, and over time caused damage that could trigger the problem.

The recalled Kia SUV

The recall affects certain 2020 to 2024 model year Kia Telluride SUVs. Approximately 1 percent of these cars on the road are estimated have the defect.

Until the problem is corrected, owners are advised to manually engage their emergency parking brake before leaving their vehicle. They will receive a notification letter about the recall from Kia in mid-May.

Kia customer service may be contacted at 800-333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC303.

Drivers can check to see if their car has been recalled by inputting their vehicle identification number (VIN) in the NHTSA’s website.
