Through his expeditions to extremely remote and frigid locations, Thompson has been drilling into ice cores to study the chemistry — and hopes to find clues as to Earth’s complex environmental past. But he’s racing against the clock of climate change and working to recover these vital specimens before they’re gone forever, so he can see what the chemistry, gases, dust, viruses and bacteria that lie within them can reveal.
