Star Power Never Gets Old
Luke Bryan’s Winning Streak
Country superstar Luke Bryan, named Thomas Luther Bryan at birth, grew up on his family’s peanut farm in Leesburg, Georgia. During his undergraduate years at Georgia Southern University, he performed in local shows with his band. Two years later, he moved to Nashville to pursue a musical career. Bryan initially gained success as a songwriter, but it was his 2007 debut album, I’ll Stay Me, that launched his singing career, subsequently delivering five No. 1 country albums, including Crash My Party and Kill the Lights.
Bryan, who turns 50 on July 17, is a co-owner of outdoor brand Buck Commander and host of an annual Cancun concert event, “Crash My Playa.” He and his wife Caroline raise a blended family of five children, including their two sons and his late sister’s three children, on a 150-acre farm near Nashville. Bryan recently performed his hit single, “Country and She Knows It,” on American Idol, where he has served as a judge since 2018. He is currently headlining his massive “Word On The Street” tour across North America.
Halle Shines at 60
Award-winning actress Halle Berry, who turns 60 on August 14, was born Maria Halle Berry in Cleveland, Ohio. She first gained national attention as a beauty pageant competitor, winning Miss Teen All-American and Miss Ohio before moving to New York to pursue acting.
Berry’s early film roles include appearances in Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever and opposite Eddie Murphy in Boomerang. She also appeared in the X-Men films and as a “Bond girl” in Die Another Day. Berry earned an Emmy in 1999 for her performance in the HBO film Introducing Dorothy Dandridge and made history in 2002 as the first African American woman to win the Best Actress Oscar for Monster’s Ball.
Berry is a mother of two and is engaged to musician Van Hunt. Through her wellness platform Respin, she advocates for menopause education and research. “Women are told that when we reach a certain number, we’re no longer valuable. I believe the opposite. Society should look at us as jewels as we get older,” Berry said to AARP.
Keeping Up with Cattrall
Born in Liverpool, England, actress Kim Cattrall, who turns 70 on August 21, grew up in Vancouver, Canada. She moved to New York at age 16 to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. As a teenager, she made her film debut in the action thriller Rosebud alongside Peter O’Toole, and subsequently landed roles in popular TV series, including Columbo and Starsky & Hutch. She went on to appear in many 1980s comedies, including Porky’s, Police Academy, and Mannequin. However, Cattrall didn’t achieve global fame until age 41, when she portrayed the free-spirited PR executive Samantha Jones on the HBO series Sex and the City, which earned her a Golden Globe in 2002. She reprised the role in two SATC films and returned briefly in the sequel series And Just Like That…
Ten years ago, Cattrall appeared on a BBC radio program in London to read a personal essay detailing her struggles with insomnia. It was there that she met her husband, Russell Thomas, a British audio engineer. They married in a small ceremony in London in 2025 and now live on Vancouver Island.
Cool as a Cumberbatch
British actor Benedict Cumberbatch rose to fame as the iconic sleuth in Sherlock, the BBC’s crime drama series, and as the enigmatic Doctor Strange in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. He was born in London to actors Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham, who also played his parents onscreen in Sherlock. Early in his career, he was credited as Benedict Carlton, his middle name, before switching to Cumberbatch. Cumberbatch was once dubbed “The Internet’s Boyfriend” due to Sherlock’s highly vocal online fanbase.
Cumberbatch, who turns 50 on July 19, has received multiple nominations for his roles in films including The Imitation Game and The Power of the Dog. Cumberbatch married English actress Sophie Hunter in 2015, who he met on the set of the 2009 thriller Burlesque Fairytales, and they have three sons. He recently starred in the Netflix limited series Eric. Next up, he co-stars with Anthony Hopkins in Guy Ritchie’s Wife & Dog and appears in the upcoming thriller Blood on Snow.
Skarsgård’s Path to Stardom
Actor Alexander Skarsgård, who turns 50 on August 25, grew up in Stockholm, Sweden. At just seven years old, he landed his first role on TV, but the pressures of early fame led him to step away from the spotlight. After serving in Sweden’s navy, he returned to acting and studied in New York. He landed his first role as a mindless model in Zoolander. His Hollywood breakthrough came when he was cast in the HBO miniseries Generation Kill. But it was his turn as a 1,000-year-old vampire on the HBO supernatural drama series True Blood that made him an international star.
Skarsgård went on to star in the popular series Big Little Lies and Succession, and was featured as Lady Gaga’s love interest in her “Paparazzi” music video. After two decades based in the US, Skarsgård returned to Sweden in 2023. Next up, he co-stars with Olivia Colman in the Sundance 2026 fantasy film Wicker.
