Being creative has proven to reduce stress and enrich lives. But many people don’t think of themselves as being creative. If you’re one of those people, here’s some good news: you can train your brain for creativity.

Dr. Shelley Carson is author of Your Creative Brain: Seven Steps to Maximize Imagination, Productivity and Innovation in your Life. In her book, the creativity expert says anybody can be creative. “Creativity really is a mindset and the willingness to try new things,” she says. From adding a new ingredient to a recipe to rearranging your furniture, there’s no limit to the ways you can boost your creative capital.

To kick start your curriculum on creativity, try these first steps:

1.) Never Stop Learning
2.) Allow ideas to develop into reality
3.) Hang out with creative people
4.) Don’t be afraid to fail

Dr. Carson met with My Generation's Traci Mitchell to talk about her book and more ways to train your brain for creativity.
