Volunteer in Your Community. You've got what it takes to help your neighbors in need. — AARP Foundation

You've Got What It Takes

Ethel Percy Andrus, founder of AARP, called volunteers "America in action." Volunteers are important to many organizations and are the lifeblood of AARP Foundation.

Our volunteers serve in a wide variety of ways. In addition to tutoring in our acclaimed Experience Corps program and helping low- to moderate-income people file their taxes through our Tax-Aide program, trained volunteers place calls to older homeowners at risk of foreclosure, and students in our Mentor Up program help low-income older adults stay connected to their community by keeping them up to speed on technology and social media – and just by spending time with them.

AARP Foundation volunteers also take part in meal-packing events throughout the year. Thousands of volunteers have packed millions of meals for hungry seniors at events such as our annual Celebration of Service on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., every September 11.

Volunteers perform great services for the more than 20 million older adults who struggle to meet their basic needs. And our volunteers benefit as well. Tax-Aide volunteer Beverly Williams (above) says it best. Her favorite thing about volunteering? "It's the thanks we get from those we help. It's such a good feeling."

Volunteer today and help bring relief to more seniors who are struggling to meet their basic needs — and get that good feeling for yourself. You've got exactly what it takes to make a real difference in someone else's life.

Find volunteer opportunities near you.

“We are saying to our thousands of volunteers words of appreciation for their enthusiasm; admiration for their fire, interest and energy; pride in their magnanimity that keeps alive the American spirit of neighbor helping neighbor and together helping their community become a neighborhood … They are America in action.” – Ethel Percy Andrus
