How Well Do You Know the Rolling Stones?

In 1962, guitarist Brian Jones was hyping the new band’s first gig to a journalist from Jazz News and realized the ensemble needed a name. He spotted a copy of The Best of Muddy Waters, and pulled the name from the LP’s Side 1, Track 5: “Rollin’ Stone.”

“Nowhere Man” was a hit for the Beatles in 1966. Despite the supposed rivalry between the two British rock supergroups, Mick Jagger provided backup vocals on the 1967 Beatles track “Baby You’re a Rich Man.” Paul McCartney and John Lennon returned the favor, singing on the Stones’ song “We Love You.”

As Keith Richards later recalled, “‘Get Off of My Cloud’ was basically a response to people knocking on our door asking us for the follow-up to ‘Satisfaction,’” which had become the band’s first No. 1 hit in the U.S. Mick Jagger called the tune, released in September 1965 three months after “Satisfaction,” “a stop-bugging-me, post-teenage-alienation song.”

Ruby Tuesday was founded in 1972 as a burger-and-beer joint near the Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee by a then-student named Sandy Beall who later admitted he wasn’t much of a Stones fan. “I wasn’t that hip of a person,” he told The New York Times — but he gladly accepted the suggestion of a hipper fraternity brother.

Documentarian Robert Frank caught the moment for a film about the Stones’ 1972 American tour that never got released. The Sunset Strip hotel, now a balcony-less establishment called the Andaz West Hollywood, was once dubbed “the Riot House” for debaucherous stays by rockers like Jim Morrison and Guns N’ Roses’ Slash.
